Robert P. Magee

Robert P. Magee

Mr. Magee serves as Chairman and CEO of the American Shipping Group, Inc. The American Shipping Group is a holding company that comprise the blue water domestic and military support shipping businesses of Saltchuk Resources. These businesses consist of:

Totem Ocean Trailer Express. TOTE owns and operates 4 ships and 1,500 trailers. It is in the liner, common carrier business connecting Tacoma, Washington with Anchorage, Alaska.

Sea Star Line L.L.C., a common carrier operating between the Mainland US and Puerto Rico. Sea Star Line operates three ro/con vessels. This is a partnership with Taino Star Investments. (Both TOTE and Sea Star Line are part of the VISA Program)

Interocean American Shipping is a technical ship management and ship crewing company. IAS today manages and operates twenty-five vessels.

Currently, Mr. Magee is on the Board for the Thea Foss Waterway Development Authority, the Advisory Board for the Milgard School of Business, University of Washington, Tacoma, the Advisory Board for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum of the North and was the Chairman of the Pierce County United Way Campaign for 2004 and currently a member of their Board of Directors. Mr. Magee serves on the Board of Directors for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Foundation, Kings Point, New York.

Mr. Magee is a member of the Propeller Club of America, the American Bureau of Shipping, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the National Defense Transportation Association, and the National Cargo Bureau.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Magee has a B.S. degree in Marine Transportation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; Kings Point, New York, and an M.B.A. in Finance from Widener University; Chester, Pennsylvania. He studied Advanced Management at Harvard University.

Bill Deaver

Totem Ocean Trailer Express

Bill Deaver is President and Chief Operating Office of Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc.  His responsibilities cover all activities associated with TOTE's liner operations from Tacoma, WA to the Alaska Railbelt, as well as all charter vessel operations.  Recently Bill has overseen the integration of the company's two new Orca class vessels into the Alaska trade, renovations of terminals in Anchaorge and Tacoma, the phasing in of a laarge fleet of 53' trailers, and the successful integration of a new back office system into the company. 

Bill joined TOTE in March 2000 as Alaska General Manager and was promoted to V.P. & G.M. Alaska in April 2001.  He was promoted to Senior V.P. and COO in July 2002, and the title of President was added in April 2004.

During his 34-year ocean cargo transportation career, Bill has held numerous management positions with Maersk -Sea-Land and Sea-Land Service.   He has held positions in California, Korea, Republic of China, the Philippines, Canada, Hong Kong, Alaska, Ireland, and Georgia.   Bill is currently on the King and Pierce County Big Brothers/Big Sisters Board, the Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center Board, and has been active on the Tacoma Pierce County Chamber of Commerce Total Resource Campaign.   Previously Bill was on the AEDC, ALPAR, Sealife Center, Alaska Trucking Association, World Trade Center, Alaskans for Alaskans in Transportation, Arctic North, and Covenant House Boards in Anchorage, Alaska.

Bill has a BS degree in Business Finance from the University of Oklahoma, and has completed MBA studies at the University of California, San Francisco.   Bill and his wife, Valerie, live in Auburn, Washington, and they have four grown children.

Hugh L. Simpson

Chief Financial Officer

Hugh L. Simpson

Hugh L. Simpson joined TOTE in September 2006 as Chief Financial Officer.  Hugh is responsible for corporate accounting, financial services, credit and collections, IT and organization-wide quality programs.  Hugh comes to TOTE from Sound Transit in Seattle where he was the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer for seven years.  He played an integral role in financing and implementing the construction of a $2.4 billion light rail transportation segment in the Puget Sound area. 

Prior to Sound Transit, Hugh worked for worked for a local municipality, an international distribution company based out of Japan and a medical device manufacturing company located in Texas. 

Hugh graduated from the University of Idaho with a B.S. degree in Accounting and is a member of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants.  He and his wife Denise have been married for twenty-one years and live in Kent, Washington with their three sons.   

 

John Parrott

Vice President Commercial (Sales and Pricing)

John Parrott

John Parrott is the Vice President of Commercial for the Lower 48 and Alaska located in Federal Way. His responsibilities include sales, marketing, special projects, pricing and contract administration for the Lower 48 and Alaska, as well as the Fairbanks terminal and the Juneau public policy work. John joined TOTE in June 2002 as the Alaska General Manager TOTE's Alaska Division and was promoted 2004 to the position of Vice President/General Manager. Mr. Parrott initially worked for TOTE as Chief Mate of the SS Northern Lights in 1992. He was present throughout the conversion of that vessel including the addition of a 90' mid-body section. Prior to that, he was the General Manager for Sea Star Stevedore which manages the loading, discharge and terminal operations for TOTE. In 1996 he joined Sea-Land as a Marine Superintendent. John is a licensed master in the Merchant Marines, having sailed for ten years aboard a wide range of vessel types and trade routes.

John is active on the boards of ALPAR, the Marine Exchange, AEDC, and Providence Hospital Foundation. John has taken a keen interest in Alaska's work force development in the maritime industry.

Born in Seattle, Mr. Parrott has a BS degree in Marine Transportation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; Kings Point, New York, and an MBA in Finance from Seattle University. He holds a commission in the United States Navy Reserve.

Peter Lindsey

Vice President, Support Operations

Peter Lindsey

Peter Lindsey joined TOTE in July 2006, as Vice President of Support Operations. Peter is responsible for Alaska Operations, Alaska Finance, Corporate Fleet Management, Fife Maintenance, and Federal Way Customer Support Operations. Peter comes to TOTE from Expeditors International where he was Director of ECMS/Order Management, a proprietary logistics service product. Peter graduated from Kings Point with a B.S. in Marine Transportation and has an MBA from Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA. During his 20 years of transportation experience, he has sailed on cargo ships, worked in vessel management and stevedoring operations, and most recently in international supply chain logistics sales and marketing.

Peter and his family live on Bainbridge Island. During his career, they have lived in several places, including Asia.

Claudia Roberts

Vice President, New Business

Claudia Roberts

Claudia Roberts is the Vice President of New Business Development for Totem Ocean Trailer Express. Prior to this capacity, she was Vice President of Pricing. She has been employed at TOTE for over 20 years, and earned her MBA from the University of Washington.

Claudia is responsible for the ongoing employment of the two Ponce class vessels, the Westward Venture and the Great Land. Her division also oversees the VISA agreement with the government, and chartering activities with the government and commercial parties. Additionally, she evaluates proposals for potential vessel employment and new areas of business.

Phil Morrell

Vice President, Marine & Terminal Operations

Phil Morrell

Phil Morrell is the Vice President Marine & Terminal Operations for Totem Ocean Trailer Express. Phil oversees all segments of TOTE's Marine Operations and the Tacoma Terminal Operations.

Phil has over 22 years experience in the shipping/transportation industry. Before TOTE, he was employed by Todd Pacific Shipyards, Sunmar Shipping, and Holland American Line Westours, Inc., where he held the position of Marine Superintendent, Technical Operations Manager.

Phil earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Oregon. Phil and his family live in West Seattle.

Bonnie Sellen

Director of Human Resources

Bonnie Sellen

Bonnie Sellen is the Director of Human Resources for Totem Ocean Trailer Express, located in the corporate office in Federal Way, Washington.  Bonnie is responsible for all human resources functions community affairs, corporate giving and public relations.

Bonnie has an MBA from the University of Washington with an emphasis on Human Resources, Marketing, and Finance.  She also has a BA in Social Sciences/Psychology from Seattle Pacific University.  She is married to John Sellen, and they have three grown children.  She serves on the boards of numerous professional and civic organizations, including Washington Drug Free Business; Family Side by Side Program; and Stephen Ministry.
