Crews are firing cannon shots into the Turnagain Arm mountains along the Seward Highway today to release built-up snow that could slide onto the roadway without warning, the Department of Transportation says.
Motorists can expect delays of 25 to 45 minutes between Anchorage and Girdwood, and the highway remains closed due to an avalanche at Mile 37, at the "Y" intersection with the Sterling Highway, according to DOT spokesman Rick Feller. The debris -- cutting off road travel to all Kenai Peninsula towns -- came down about 7 a.m., covering a 100-foot wide swath beneath 3 and 10 feet of snow, DOT says.

As expected, there will be fewer halibut available for fishermen to catch this year -- an 18 percent reduction to 33 million pounds, split among fisheries along the West Coast, British Columbia and Alaska. That follows a 19 percent cut to the catch last year.
